HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team got its season underway at the Upper Peninsula Cross Country Opener on the campus of Michigan Tech. NMU finished second behind Michigan Tech by one place. Other teams running were Finlandia University and Northland College.

Senior Nora Kiilunen led the Wildcats with a second-place finish and a time of 20:01. She was 11 seconds behind winner Deedra Irwin of Michigan Tech.

Mandy Dye (20:12.7), Rita Woitas (20:14.9) and Olivia Juntilla (20:16.5) placed fourth, fifth and sixth for NMU.

NMU runners finished in places nine thru 14 as Olivia Howard, Chelsea Farquhar, Katie Granquist, Larissa Halonen, Jordyn Ross and Alicia Romano crossed the line in the top 15.

Marie-Helen Soderman (16), Emily Allen (17) and Felicia Geisor (20) rounded out the top 20 for NMU.

The Wildcats travel to Ashland, Wisconsin next week to participate in the Northland College Invite on Friday, Sept. 9.
