ST. PAUL, Minn.– The No. 25 ranked Northern Michigan volleyball team opened the 2011 season on the wrong side of the win column dropping a three-set match to No. 6 Southwest Minn. St.
The ‘Cats were swept 21-25, 16-25, and 20-25 to open the Wildwood Lodge Volleyball Classic on Friday (Sept. 2).
NMU played catch up for most of the match, as Southwest Minn. St. dominated the match from start to finish.
The ‘Cats grabbed early leads in all three of the sets before the Mustangs quickly ran away.
Junior Sami Vierk led the ‘Cats with 11 kills, while senior Emma Wolfe and sophomore Kalli Herron combined for 11 kills. Junior Abby Lovell had 30 of the teams 33 assists and Kalin Zimmerman led the defensive front with 15 digs.
Serving errors were an issue for the ‘Cats, with the team combining for a total of seven errors.
Brooke Burmeister set the pace for the Mustangs leading all players with 20 kills. Rachel Westby and Mary Groth combined for 18 kills, while Cara Carson established the attack with 39 assists.
The ‘Cats are back in action later today when they take on Pittsburgh State at 4 p.m. The Gorillas lost in three sets to Concordia earlier on Friday.
