WEIGHTLIFTER MCCOY ATHLETE OF MONTH

MARQUETTE – Weightlifter Vanessa McCoy, a facility use athlete training with the United States Olympic Education Center team, has been selected as July’s Athlete of the Month.

            Weightlifting coach Andy Tysz nominated McCoy (Wichita Falls, Texas) for her performance at the 2011 Senior National Championships July 15-17 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

            “Vanessa possesses an abundant amount of good cheer and congenial spirit in each of her activities and interactions with her teammates and others,” said Tysz. “She is a diligent and consistent worker who always seeks information and feedback, which will lead to competitive excellence.”

            McCoy lifted a total of 181 kilograms to win the 63 kg weight class. She snatched 83 kg and lifted 98 kg for the clean and jerk.

            “I’ve had a hard struggle trying to overcome injuries so the win feels good,” said McCoy. “I focused on hitting certain numbers, not winning. It was a very successful first meet back.”

            McCoy currently coaches gymnastics and has visited Bay Cliff Health Camp to talk to campers about weightlifting and the importance of staying active.

            McCoy is entering her second year training with the USOEC.
