MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 25 ranked Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team had its annual Green and Gold match on Wednesday (Aug. 24) in Vandament Arena. The Gold squad used its experience to knock off Green in three straight sets, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-11.
“We did great things on both sides of the net,” head coach Dominic Yoder said. “Our Green team middle blockers did a great job against the Gold hitters. We had bright spots on the offense on Gold with Lina (Lopes), Ellen (Lemos), Emma (Wolfe). Our team blocking has improved this preseason and that’s very important for us.”
Wolfe led Gold with 10 kills. Lopes and Vierk combined for 13, while Abby Lovell had 20 assists at the setter position. Kalin Zimmerman had nine digs.
Green was led by Danielle Kowalski with seven kills. Kalli Herron and Sarah Hamilton had six kills apiece. Kaitlyn Hoffman had 19 assists and Kristen Wetzel had eight digs.
NMU travels to the University of Minnesota-Duluth for its final scrimmage before the season opener at the defending National Champion, Concordia-St. Paul’s, tournament.
The ‘Cats open the home schedule with a three game home stand on Sept. 9, 10, 11 against Saginaw Valley State, Grand Valley State and Ferris State.
