MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center is hosting the Central Cross Country Ski Elite Team’s training camp through Sunday, Aug. 7.

The Wisconsin-based team (roster below) chose Marquette, Mich., and the USOEC because members could have access to residence halls, food and training sites in close proximity.

“This camp is all about volume—lots of hours of training to help build our base,” said coach Gus Kaeding, a 2008 Northern Michigan University graduate. “Marquette is perfect to train in because there are paved roads with few cars, numerous trails and Lake Superior to relax at after training.”

Kaeding and Caitlin Gregg, a 2004 NMU graduate, both skied for NMU’s Nordic Ski Team. Gregg competed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, placing 30th out of 78 competitors in the 10k freestyle cross-country skiing event.

“It feels really good to be back,” said Kaeding. “Marquette has a way of drawing you in and keeping you here. I am looking forward to showing the team what a Marquette summer is.”

The team already roller skied in the rain and County Road 480.  In addition, the team will run the Wetmore trails and travel to Munising to run at Pictured Rocks.

This is an “off year” for the skiers, meaning there is no World Championships or Olympics so the team is focusing all of their training on the U.S. Nationals and domestic tour.
