MARQUETTE – Freestyle wrestler Erin Golston has been selected as the United States Olympic Education Center Athlete of the Month for May for her performance at the 2011 Body Bar FILA Junior Nationals May 15 in Kissimmee, Fla.
Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) defeated Emily Webster (Sedalia, Mo.) 5-1, 6-3 in the first match and 5-0, 6-0 in the second match in a best-of-three format qualifying for the U.S. team for the FILA Junior World Championships July 16-21 in Bucharest, Romania.
“Erin is the smallest competitor in the room by weight and works as if this is not a factor. She demonstrates how to work hard daily by staying after practice and asking questions,” said coach Shannyn Gillespie, “She knows what she needs to do daily and does it. She has grown every day technically, tactically and psychologically.”
A third-year USOEC resident, Golston recently graduated from Marquette Senior High School with honors and will be attending NMU this fall as a freshman.
