MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Outdoor Track and Field Team had its 2011 season come to an end. The Wildcats broke eight school records and had Jaime Roberts finish third, making her an All-American, at the 2011 NCAA Championship in pole vault. Catherine Angeli reset the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Bailey Franklin reset the high jump and triple jump marks, Samara White reset the long jump record and Roberts reset the pole vault record. The 4x400 relay team of Sydney Schultz, Katrina Lamansky, Sara Turschak and Colby West reset the record and the 4x100 relay team of White, Brittnee Balbierz, Katy Lafayette and Angeli reset the old mark.

NMU started the season at the Carroll University Invitational (April 2). Team scores weren’t kept as NMU had 24 top-five finishes, including six first-place finishes. Bailey Franklin won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump. She also was second in the high jump while setting a new school record, clearing 5-7. Catherine Angeli won the 200 dash and tied her old school record with a time of 25:29. She finished second in the 100 dash and was on the 4x100 relay team with Samara White, Brittnee Balbierz and Katy Lafayette who finished fourth. White was second in the long jump. Christina Turman won the 800 run and was second in the 1500 run. Jaime Roberts had second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles and the pole vault. Melissa Christensen was third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the high jump. Kristen Schulz won the 3000 steeplechase while teammate Nora Kiilunen came in third. Colby West won the 400 hurdles and was followed in second-place by Brooke Granquist. West was the anchor of the 4x400 relay team that finished second. Sydney Schultz, Katrina Lamansky and Sara Turschak were also on the relay team. Turschak finished third in the 400. Jessica Krob (3rd) and Chelsea Farquhar (4th) finished in the top five in the 5000. Delany Lovett was fourth in the triple jump. In the javelin, Mariah Beaman (3rd) and Katie Searles (5th) led the way for NMU.

NMU competed at Carroll University for the second week in a row (April 9). Team scores were once again not kept as the ‘Cats had 12 first-place finishes. Catherine Angeli reset two of her school records in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, winning both events. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams set new records while winning the events. Samara White, Brittnee Balbierz, Katy Lafayette and Catherine Angeli were members of the 4x100 squad that ran 48.06 seconds. Sydney Schultz, Sara Turschak, Katrina Lamansky and Colby West ran 3:58.67 in the 4x400 race. Jamie Roberts won the pole vault. Christina Turman won the 1,500 meter run and was followed by Nora Kiilunen (3rd), Kristen Schulz (4th) and Chelsea Farquhar (6th). Turman (2nd), Rachael Williams (4th), Kiilunen (6th) and Shulz (9th) were all in the top 10 in the 800 meter run. Olivia Juntilla won the 1,000 meter run and Jess Krob was second. Brittany Loomis was third in the 5,000 meter run. Balbierz finished second in the 100 and third in the 200. Lamansky won the 400 meter run and Sydney Schultz was third. Bailey Franklin finished first in the 100 meter hurdles while Melissa Christensen was second. Roberts (5th) and Katie Searles (6th) also placed in the event. Colby West and Brooke Granquist were the top two in the 400 meter hurdles. Franklin won the high jump while Brooke Granquist was fourth. Turschak was third in the pole vault. Delaney Lovett was third in the triple jump. Christensen was first in the long jump followed by teammates Samara White (3rd), Jaime Roberts (4th) and Katie Searles (5th). Mariah Beamen was second in the javelin.

Northwood University hosted a meet on April 16. Team scores weren’t kept. Jamie Roberts tied with two others for first place. Catherine Angeli won the 100 dash. Angeli also finished third in the 200 dash. Sara Turschak (3rd), Katrina Lamansky (5th) and Sydney Schultz (8th) finished in the top 10 in the 400 dash. Nora Kiilunen was third in the 800. Christina Turman was fourth while Kiilunen was fifth and Alicia Romano was eight in the 1500. Bailey Franklin finished second in the 100 hurdles while Melissa Christensen was fourth. Colby West was fourth in the 400 hurdles. Kristen Schulz was fourth in the 3000 steeplechase. Both the 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay teams won their events. Samara White, Balbierz, Katy Lafayatte and Angeli were on the 4x100 team. Lamansky, West, Turschak and Schultz were on the 4x400 squad. Brooke Granquist tied four fourth in the high jump. Melissa Christensen and Brooke Granquist finished first and second in the heptathlon. Samara White and Delany Lovett were fifth and sixth in the long jump. Bailey Franklin won the triple jump as teammates Lovett (3rd), Christensen (6th) and Mariah Beamen (8th) also competed. Beamen was second in the javelin throw.

NMU competed in the 45th annual Hillsdale College Gina Relays. Jaime Roberts was second overall in the pole vault as the top Wildcat finisher. Bailey Franklin had two fourth-place finishes in the triple jump and high jump. Franklin’s triple jump of 37-9.5 was a new school record. Samara White finished sixth in the long jump with a record setting jump of 18-3.25. Catherine Angeli had a fourth-place finish in the 100 meter dash. NMU’s 4x100 relay team finished fourth with a new record time of 47.72. Members of the squad were Samara White, Brittnee Balbierz, Katy Lafayette and Angeli.

NMU finished fifth at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Northwood University. Bailey Franklin is the GLIAC champion in the triple jump with a jump of 38-7.5. She also placed sixth in the high jump. Catherine Angeli broke her 100 and 200 records. She broke her 100 dash record (12.10) on Thursday night in the preliminary round of the 100 and broke her 200 dash record (24.81) in the finals on Friday. Angeli placed second in both events. Brooke Granquist (4th) and Delaney Lovett (6th) also placed in the triple jump. The 4x100 relay team finished fourth. Samara White, Balbierz, Katy Lafayette and Angeli were the member of the squad. Kristen Schulz placed sixth in the 3000 steeplechase. Jaime Roberts tied for fourth-place in the pole vault. Bailey Franklin had a fifth-place finish in the long jump. Melissa Christensen and Brooke Granquist were fifth and sixth in the heptathlon.

NMU athletes had a last chance to qualify for Nationals at the UW-La Crosse Eagle Open (May 13). Jaime Roberts had a provisional qualifying jump and set a new school record as she won the pole vault, clearing 12-3.5. Bailey Franklin won the high jump and came in second in the triple jump. Samara White finished fifth in the long jump (16-10.75) and Mariah Beamen placed third in the javelin (114-11).
