MARQUETTE– The United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman team had 11 first-place finishers while the freestyle team had two wrestlers qualify for World Team Trials at the 2011 University Nationals April 21-24 in Akron, Ohio.
Northern Michigan University junior Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah) won the 66 kilogram championship match in Greco-Roman with 0-2, 7-0, 5-0 decision over Navy Mat Club’s Joseph Locksmith.
NMU sophomore Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.) finished 3-0 to secure first place at the 70 kg weight class, while junior Alex Fleming (Sterling, Va.) placed third.
At the 79 kg weight class, sophomore Josh Castellano (Wood Dale, Ill.) and junior Chad Hemerson (Monterey, Calif.) faced either other in the championship match with Hemerson winning 1-0, 2-0.
Junior Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn.) beat fellow teammate freshman Marcus Finau (Oahu, Hawaii) in the final match 6-0, 1-0.
Senior Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) placed first at 120 kg. He won the championship match 3-0, 4-0, and had a tournament record of 3-0 with a pin.
Junior Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.), junior Aaron Briggs (Tuscon, Ariz.), and sophomore Mark Stenberg (Lockport, Ill.) all placed first at 55 kg, 74 kg, and 84 kg, respectively, for the second year in a row.
Briggs defeated sophomore and teammate Corey Hope (Carol Stream, Ill.) in the final match 2-0, 1-0.
Freshman Ethan Dondlinger (Slinger, Wis.) lost his first match, but won five in the loser’s bracket to finish third at 84 kg.
In the women’s freestyle competition, sophomore Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y.) and junior Schulyer Brown (Montelier, Va.) qualified for World Team Trials June 10-11. Sluberski finished first at 51 kg with a pin in the final match. Brown placed second at 59 kg with a 5-1 record.
Freshman Anneliese DeAragon (Sandpoint, Idaho) placed third at 72 kg.
