MARQUETTE– Freestyle wrestler Jenna Burkert has been selected as the United States Olympic Education Center Athlete of the Month for March.

Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.), a Marquette Senior High School senior and third-year USOEC resident, earned a medal at the Klippan Lady Open in Sweden and USAW Junior Folkstyle Nationals during the month of March.

At the Klippan Lady Open, Burkert captured a bronze medal after defeating two-time world medalist Agata Pietruzk (Poland) and 2007 European bronze medalist Emese Barka (Hungary).

Burkert claimed the Junior Folkstyle National title for the second consecutive year. She pinned Krista Revelle (Kansas Krusaders) in the finals and finished with a 3-0 record.

Coach Shannyn Gillespie said, “Jenna is a 17-year old high school student athlete and leads a team of mostly college athletes by example. She stays after practice to strengthen areas where needed and watches video to see what she did well and what she can improve.”
