Wrestlers Competing in U.S. Open
MARQUETTE—United States Olympic Education Center wrestlers are competing in the 2011 Freestyle and Greco-Roman U.S. Open in Cleveland, Ohio April 7-9.
The top seven wrestlers in each weight class at the U.S. Open will qualify for the U.S. World Team Trials in Oklahoma City June 9-11.
Northern Michigan University sophomore Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y.) is seeded fourth at 51 kilograms. Sluberski finished second at the 2011 Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals earlier this year. Sluberski could face Gabrielle Henry (New York AC) whom she fell to in the gold medal match in the WCWAN.
Marquette Senior High School senior Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.) is seeded fourth at 59 kg. Burkert claimed the Junior Folkstyle National title for the second straight year in March.
In the men’s Greco-Roman division, senior Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn.) will be competing at 55 kg. Tellgren is the 2010 Sunkist Kids International Open champion.
Senior Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.) will be competing in the 66 kg weight class. Sanchez recently competed in the 2011 Dave Schultz Memorial International Tournament and the 2011 Kiki Cup.
Freestyle alternatives are senior Jenna Pavlik (Lewes, Del.) at 72 kg, and junior Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) at 55 kg.
Alternatives in the Greco-Roman division are senior Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) at 96 kg, sophomores Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.) at 66 kg, Mark Stenberg (Lockport, Ill.) at 84 kg, and freshman Kendrick Sanders (Miami, Fla.).
