MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame will induct four new members Saturday, April 16, 2011 in the Great Lakes Room of the University Center. A social hour beginning at 6 p.m. will kick off the evening which will be followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The Sports Hall of Fame ceremony is being held in conjunction with the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet.
The second inductee is Andrea Gommans. She lettered four times in volleyball from 1990-93. Gommans was a three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and a three-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team Selection as well as the 1990 GLIAC Freshman of the Year. Gommans holds NMU’s record for career kills (1,664), career blocks (761) and blocks in a season (229). She played 145 career matches and was a member of the 1993 NCAA Championship team that was inducted in the NMU Hall of Fame in 1999, the NCAA runner-up team in 1992, the NCAA quarterfinal team in 1991 and three GLIAC championship teams.
“Andrea was in integral member of our first volleyball national championship team,” said NMU associate athletic director Steve Reed. “She was a dominant player at the net and a great team leader. Her stats speak for themselves. Andrea was also an excellent role model for our program on campus and throughout the community.”
Gommans and her husband Holger Wagner live in Nariobi, Kenya. Holger is also a graduate of NMU.
