BAY CITY, Mich. – Two players from the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team have been selected to the all Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams. Chelsea Lyons has been selected to the GLIAC North Division second team. Kellie Rietveld was selected to the GLIAC North Division all-defensive team.
Lyons—a forward from Stillwater, Minn.—led the 2010-11 Wildcats in scoring and rebounding. She was 14th in the conference in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Lyons was tied with Erin Powers with 139 rebounds. Her 46.9 field goal percentage was 15th in the GLIAC.
Lyons had six 20-point performances and averaged over 16 points per in the final nine games as she started the last 14. She scored 23 points against Michigan Tech and in an early February win at Findlay.
Rietveld—a senior guard from New Lenox, Illi.—led the charge for the Wildcats on the defensive end. Rietveld averaged 8.2 points and 3.5 rebounds for the season. She also had 44 assists, 24 steals and shot 83.6 percent from the 3-point line.
Rietveld scored a season-high 19 points in an early December win over UW-Parkside. She also scored 18 in the first game of the season at Minnesota-Duluth.
NMU finished the season 12-14 overall and 7-12 in the GLIAC. The ‘Cats won four of their final six games.
