UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team wrapped up the 2010-11 season with a loss on the road at Saginaw Valley State University. NMU finishes the season 12-14 overall and 7-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the, 55-45, defeat.
NMU got as close as four with 6:35 to go after Hillary Bowling drained a 3-point bucket and Erin Powers added a layup. The Cardinals finished the game on a 7-1 run to win by 10.
NMU trailed by only two at half (22-20) but SVSU went on a 14-5 run to lead by 11 early in the second half.
Chelsea Lyons was the lone Wildcat in double figures as she scored a game-high 15 points. She also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Staci Beckel and Steffani Stoeger finished the game with 9 points each.
NMU shot only 28 percent to the Cardinals 42. NMU committed only 11 turnovers while the Cardinals had 24. The ‘Cats scored 17 points off of the turnovers.
SVSU (8-18, 5-14 GLIAC) was led in scoring by Kristen Greene with 14 and Cheritee Green with nine.
Saturday’s game marked the end of careers for five NMU seniors. Steffani Stoeger finished her career with 1,033 points, good for 22nd on NMU’s career scoring list. She also ended her career with 199 steals, making her second on that list.
Erin Powers ended her career with 462 rebounds, placing her 20th on the all-time rebounding list.
Jaclyn Davey, Kellie Rietveld and Callie Youngman also played their last game as Wildcats.
