Men End Season With Loss at SVSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team closed out the 2010-11 season with a loss on the road at Saginaw Valley State. The Wildcats finished 9-17 overall and 4-15 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the, 76-61, defeat.

NMU opened the game on an 11-0 run sparked by five points from Matthew Craggs and four from Jared Benson. The Cardinals went on a 15-0 run of its own to lead by nine with 3:11 to go and led 28-23 at half.

SVSU (13-13, 9-10 GLIAC) boosted its lead to 10 in the middle of the second half and closed the game on a 15-6 run.

NMU was led in scoring by Craggs, finishing with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He also had six rebounds and two assists. Benson ended the game with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Chris Paquin and DeAndre Taylor each scored nine.

NMU shot 46 percent and had 14 second chance points off of eight offensive rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 46 percent in the game and made 10 more free throws than the ‘Cats (17-7).

Greg Foster had a game-high 24 points for the Cardinals and Keithan Jackson and Dan Genther scored 13 each.

Saturday’s game marked the end of the first season—for the ‘Cats—under head coach Doug Lewis.
