MIDLAND, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team won its third game in a row, defeating Northwood, 69-58, Thursday (Feb. 24) from the Bennett Center.
Earlier this season the ‘Cats gave up a 27-point first half lead to the Timberwolves. This time the ‘Cats expanded on its seven-point halftime lead and held on to win.
NMU (12-13, 7-11 GLIAC) made 25 of its 31 free throws in the game, including 17 in the final 1:35. Lyons made 10-of-12 from the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 20 points. Steffani Stoeger made eight free throws and scored 16 points. Kellie Rietveld was the other Wildcat in double digits with 13.
NMU shot 38 percent from the floor and committed 10 fewer turnovers than the Timberwolves (15-25).
Four players were in double figures for Northwood (14-10, 10-8 GLIAC). Preseason conference player of the year Pam Wilson had 14 while Savannah Stedman had 11 and Corrie Brown and Megan Gonta had 10 each.
NMU led 27-20 at the half and led by as many as 15 in the second half.
