MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team will wrap up the 2010-11 season this week with two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. NMU (8-16, 3-14 GLIAC) will hit the road to take on Northwood University (10-16, 7-10 GLIAC) Thursday (Feb. 24) and Saginaw Valley State University (12-12, 8-9 GLIAC) on Saturday (Feb. 26). Both games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats split a pair of games last week with visiting Lake Erie College and Ashland University. NMU lost to LEC 66-50 on Thursday night despite Mylan Murphy’s double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The ‘Cats took the court again on Saturday and came from behind to defeat Ashland, 72-68. Freshman Matthew Craggs scored a career-high 20 points in the win over the Eagles.
Jared Benson is averaging 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Benson left Thursday night’s contest with an injury after the first eight minutes. He was cleared to play on Saturday and was in the starting line-up finishing with 10 points and two blocks and the game-winning bucket. DeAndre Taylor (13.9 points per game) is second on the team in scoring. Taylor netted 15 points in Thursday night’s loss, but sat out Saturday’s final home game with an injury. Matthew Craggs had electrifying week for the ‘Cats as he scored 33 points for the two games. Craggs shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from beyond the arc in the squad’s last home stand of the season.
The Timberwolves are averaging 73.1 points per game this season and freshmen Bobby Lewis ranks ninth in the GLIAC in scoring averaging 15 points per game. Lewis is also averaging 7.1 rebounds per game. Andrew VanDierenDonck is second for Northwood averaging 12 points per game. Northwood is battling for a spot in the GLIAC tournament.
NMU defeated Northwood, 85-82, back on Jan. 29 from the Berry Events Center. Jared Benson had a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Four other ‘Cats were in double figures. NMU shot 53 percent in the game and outscored the T-Wolves by seven in the second half after being down by four at the break.
Saginaw Valley State is .500 for the month of February and the team is coming off a loss to Hillsdale College (84-68) on Saturday. The Cardinals average a GLIAC low 70.9 points per game and Greg Foster leads the team in scoring at 16.7 points per game, in only 14 games this season. Michael Fuate (13.6), Keithan Jackson (12.5) and Chris Webb (11.3) also averaging in double figures for the Cardinals. SVSU is looking to qualify for the GLIAC tournament
Saginaw Valley State defeated NMU, 97-68, on Jan. 13. Keithan Jackson and Greg Foster combined for 51 points for the Cardinals. The ‘Cats were led by Martin Gross with 15 points, Chris Paquin with 12 and DeAndre Taylor’s 11. NMU shot only 34 percent to SVSU’s 50.
