Men Skiers Dominate NCAA Regional

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan Nordic ski teams competed in both the classic and freestyle races of the NCAA Regional on Saturday from the campus of Michigan Tech. The classic races were supposed to be held on Friday but due to the windy weather both events were held on Saturday.

The men’s team won both of the events, beating out the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Martin Banerud and Andy Liebner finished first and second in both the 10k classic and 10k freestyle. Erik Soderman was third in the freestyle and 12th in the classic. Chris Bowler finished fourth in the classic and 11th in the freestyle. Kevin Cutts was sixth in the classic and eighth in the freestyle.

The women finished second in both the classic and freestyle behind Alaska-Fairbanks.

Monica Markvarsen led the way for the women in the 10k classic race as she finished third in 33:43.1. Marie Soderman was two back in fifth place and Libby Ellis was ninth. Jordyn Ross and Christina Turman finished 22nd and 23rd. Ingrid Fjeldheim (29th) and Karmen Whitham (38th) also crossed the line for NMU.

Turman finished second in the 5k freestyle behind Raphaela Siber of Alaska-Fairbanks. Fjeldheim was seventh, Soderman ninth, Markvardsen 12th, Ellis 17th, Ross 22nd and Whitham 47th.

NMU has a few weeks to prepare for the NCAA Championship in Stowe, Vermont on March 10 and 12.
