MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team picked up a win on Saturday afternoon over visiting Ashland University 72-68. With the victory NMU picked up its third Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win in the final game of the season at the Berry Events Center.
Jared Benson scored the go-ahead layup with 39 seconds to go and Chris Paquin added a pair of free throws to seal the win after he rebounded Kale Richardson’s 3-point miss.
NMU (8-16, 3-14 GLIAC) was down seven with 4:08 to go but ended the game on an 11-0 run. Benson and Matthew Craggs added a pair of free throws and Craggs drained a 3-pointer that tied the game at 68 with 1:32 to go.
The Wildcats played solid defense against the Eagles all afternoon hauling down 25 defensive rebounds and a season- high seven blocks.
Craggs led all scores in the game with 20 points and eight rebounds. Martin Gross netted 15 points and Mylan Murphy chipped in with 14 points and a game-high four blocks.
Richardson finished with 15 points and Evan Yates chipped in with 14 points for Ashland who have now lost three games in a row and will finish the season against Lake Erie (Feb. 24) and Ohio Dominican (Feb. 26).
For the game NMU shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the floor. The ‘Cats wear a near perfect from the charity stripe, making 13-of-14 free throws.
The Eagles shot 38 percent (21-of-54) and were just 6-of-25 in the second half (24 percent).
NMU will now head downstate for its final two games of the season. The ‘Cats face Northwood University on Thursday (Feb. 24)—who they defeated (89-90) back on Jan. 29—and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 26). Tip-off for both games is set for 6 p.m.
