ISHPEMING, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams continued its dominance over conference opponents as both the men and women won the team freestyle events in day one of the Central Collegiate Ski Association Championships.
NMU finished one, two and three in the men’s 10k freestyle event at Al Quaal Recreation Center to lead by 15 points over Alaska-Fairbanks. Andy Liebner won the race in a time of 29:24.6. Erik Soderman finished second and Chris Bowler was third.
Martin Banerud (8th), Kevin Cutts (18th) and Thomas McFadden (34th) were the other Wildcat finishers.
The women’s team won by only four points over Alaska-Fairbanks (77-73). Christina Turman was the top Wildcat as she finished third in 17:32.1. Marie Soderman wasn’t far behind in fifth place and Libby Ellis was the final scoring skier in green and gold in eighth place.
Monica Markvardsen (9th), Ingrid Fjeldheim (15th) and Jordyn Ross (16th) also crossed the line for NMU.
Skiing gets going again on Sunday (Feb. 13) with the men’s 20k classic race starting at 10 a.m. The women’s 15k classic gets under way at noon. Both races are mass starts taking place on the Teal Lake loop and admission is free.
