Wrestlers Gain International Experience

MARQUETTE– United States Olympic Education Center freestyle wrestler Jenna Burkert and Greco-Roman wrestler Kendrick Sanders each placed fifth at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Feb. 5 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.), a senior at Marquette Senior High School, earned fifth place in the women’s 59 kilogram division after pinning Michelle Fazzari (Brock WC).

Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va) and Laura Conway (Traverse City, Mich.) also competed.

“The girls are where they need to be at this point in the season,” said coach Shannyn Gillespie. “Right now we are doing more training than competitions to hone our skills.”

Northern Michigan University freshman Kendrick Sanders (Miami, Fla.) placed fifth in the men’s 74 kg division after defeating Jakub Tim (Poland), 5-1, 1-0.

Sophomore Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.), junior Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah), senior Ben  Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.) and facility use athlete Thrasher Porcher (Winter Springs, Fla.) also competed.

“Everyone got something out of this tournament,” said coach Rob Hermann. “We use it as a training exercise and to get as much experience with international wrestlers as possible. It was all about experience and technique. I’m really proud of my wrestlers.”
