MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team (9-12, 4-10 GLIAC) will meet the Lake Superior State Lakers (14-6, 11-3 GLIAC) for the 80th time Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium where the ‘Cats hold an 18-15 record. The Wildcats will take the trip to Sault St. Marie looking for their 10th win of the season and splitting this year’s series as the Lakers defeated NMU back on Jan. 15 (62-58). NMU is coming off a win over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division leader Findlay (68-65).
Chelsea Lyons and Staci Beckel are NMU’s top scorers this season. Lyons is averaging 12.2 points per game while Beckel is at 11.6 for the year. Steffani Stoeger leads the team in assists (47) and steals (40). Hillary Bowling is back in the line-up after missing a couple of games due to injury, she leads the ‘Cats in 3-pointers this season with 30.
The Lakers are currently ranked second in the GLIAC North Division behind Michigan Tech and have won three of their last four. LSSU is led by Emily Joseph who is averaging 19.1 points per game in conference play this season. Joseph also leads the Lakers in assists (88) and steals (41) and Cassy Schemberger is shooting a conference best 65.7 percent from the floor.
