MARQUETTE, Mich. –The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the recipients of the January Athletes of the Month. Martin Banerud from the men’s Nordic ski team was named the male winner, while Bailey Franklin a member of the track and field team picked up the female award.
Banerud, a senior from Oslo, Norway, was the top collegiate finisher in the 15k classic race and finished third in the 10k freestyle, at the Mayor’s Challenge in Minneapolis (Jan. 22-23). Banerud won by 11 seconds in the classic and was only 10 seconds behind the winner in the freestyle race. With his performance he was named Central Collegiate Ski Association men’s skier of the week. The following week, Banerud won both the classic and freestyle races at the USSA Super Tour at Michigan Tech (Jan. 29-30).
Franklin, a junior from River Falls, Wis, cleared 5’ 8.75” in the high jump, which set a new school record and also qualified her for nationals, in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 12. Franklin is currently ranked sixth in the nation in the high jump. At the University of Wisconsin Elite Meet, Franklin finished second overall in the pentathlon with 3,335 points and qualified as a provisional for nationals. She also broke the school record that she set last season in the pentathlon and placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 36’ 4.25”. Franklin is currently ranked sixth in the nation for the high jump, 17th for the pentathlon and 13th in the triple jump.
