MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Hockey Wildcats (11-13-4, 9-9-2 CCHA) will be hosting the Lake Superior State Lakers (7-12-7, 5-9-6 CCHA) at the Berry Events Center for a pair of Central Collegiate Hockey Association conference games on Friday and Saturday, February 4-5. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. on both nights. NMU is coming off a winless (2-5, 1-6) weekend down at No. 17 Western Michigan and the Lakers split (4-2, 1-2) contests against Blowing Green.
The ‘Cats and Lakers last skated against each other in November when the clubs split a pair of games in Sault Ste. Marie. NMU took the first game 4-1(Nov. 5) before falling 3-1(Nov. 6) the following game. This weekend’s games will be the 99th and 100th meetings between the two schools.
Junior forward Tyler Gron is first on the team with 25 points and shares the team’s assist lead (13) with senior Greger Hanson. Gron leads the team with 12 goals on the season, with his last coming against Denver (Jan.1) and Justin Florek is second with 12 goals. Sophomore Scott Macaulay has registered 12 assists on the season and junior Andrew Cherniwchan has 11.
In net, junior Jared Coureau and Reid Ellingson continue to split time. Ellingson was in the net during Friday night’s loss stopping 21 shots and has a season save percentage of .919 which is good for fourth in the conference. Coreau was in goal Saturday night steering away 44 shots. He has a record of 4-5-2 with a .909 save percentage for the season.
LSSU is led by senior forward Rick Schofield with 24 points and shares the goal-scoring lead with sophomore Domenic Monardo with 10 each. Schofield has a team-best 14 assists and Monardo is second with 13.
In net freshmen Kevin Kapalka is ninth in the CCHA with a 2.41 goals-against average and ranks seventh with a .917 save percentage.
Weekend events planned in conjunction with the series include a Blue Line Club luncheon, silent auction and Blue Line/Wildcat Club member socials.
The BLC will be held at 11:45 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 4) at the NMU University Center. The luncheon is open to the public and costs $9 per person. The annual silent auction will be at the Berry Events Center starting at 6:30 p.m. until the start of the third period for Friday’s game. Friday’s club member social will take place in the Wildcat Room of the BEC from 6:30-7:30 p.m. till the start of the third period.
