NMU Men Take on Top Teams in GLIAC South

MARQUETTE, Mich.– The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team is traveling south for a two-game road trip. The Wildcats take on Wayne State on Thursday (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 5), the ‘Cats travel to Ohio to take on No. 4 Findlay at 1 p.m.

NMU is 7-12 overall and 2-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The ‘Cats are coming off a weekend split after defeating Northwood (85-82) on Saturday and losing to No. 17 Hillsdale on Thursday. Jared Benson averaged 19 points per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 100 percent (14-14) from the free throw line. Benson also had 22 rebounds and four blocks. Matthew Craggs scored 25, DeAndre Taylor 28, and Matt Everson scored 20 including a season-high 17 on Saturday.

Wayne State is 14-4 and 10-2 in the GLIAC. The two conference losses came to Findlay and Ashland. Mike Hollingsworth (16.8), Bryan Smothers (15.9) and Jerry Oden (10.6) lead the Warriors in scoring. Wayne State was ranked No. 21 last week but dropped out of the poll after splitting games over the weekend.

Findlay (17-1, 10-1 GLIAC) is ranked No. 4 this week by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The lone loss the Oilers had came at Wayne State. The Oilers have won five in a row and are lead in scoring by Nathan Hyde (14.7), Kyle Caiola (13.6), Aaron Robinson (10.5) and Greg Kahlig (10.1).
