HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Nordic Ski teams are competing in the Super Tour up at Michigan Tech. Both the men and the women won the classic race on Saturday (Jan. 29). The men scored 78 points and the women totaled 71.
The men had four finishers in the top five as Martin Banerud won the 10k in a time of 29:44.9. Andy Liebner was second (29:58.0) and Erik Soderman was third (30:50.0). Chris Bowler was fourth for the ‘Cats (31:17.1).
Kevin Cutts finished thirteenth and Tom McFadden was eighteenth to round it out for NMU.
The women’s team had four skiers in the top 10. Christina Turman finished second with a time of 17:52.7, Monica Markvardsen was fourth (18:03.0), Marie Soderman was seventh (18:36.6) and Libby Ellis eighth (18:42.6).
Jordyn Ross (11th), Ingrid Fjeldheim (13th) and Karmen Whitham (32nd) were the other finishers for NMU.
Friday (Jan. 28) Turman finished first in the classic sprint race at the USSA Super Tour. Turman finished in a time of 4:05.20. Andy Liener was the top finisher on the men’s side for NMU. Liebner was tenth with a time of 3:33.9.
Both teams compete in the freestyle portion of the event on Sunday.
