MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team came up just short yet again on Thursday night at the Berry Events Center. NMU (6-12, 1-10 GLIAC) fell to No. 17 Hillsdale College (15-2, 9-2 GLIAC), 73-76, despite having five ‘Cats score in double figures. With the loss NMU has now lost seven straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. This was the eighth loss of the season losing by 10 points or less.

The ‘Cats were down by 11 (16-27) with 8:39 left in the first half, but put in a solid performance to close out the first half. Joe Simon hit a 3-point shot in front of the Hillsdale bench as time expired to put the ‘Cats up by three (36-33) at the intermission.

NMU came out swinging in the second half putting together yet another big run which would give them a 10-point lead (57-47) with 10:49 left to play. The ‘Cats let Hillsdale back into the game at the 8:13 mark when the Chargers started a 12-0 run. On the run Nick Washburn netted nine of the 12 points.

DeAndre Taylor’s layup with 4:48 left to play tied the game at 65 apiece. That would be as close as NMU got before the final horn as Taylor couldn’t get a tying shot off in time.

Jared Benson led NMU with 15 points and hauled down nine rebounds. Taylor netted 14 and Matthew Craggs finished with 13. Martin Gross and Chris Paquin chipped in with 11 each. As a team NMU had 38 rebounds which was the most Hillsdale has given up all season.

NMU shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-53). The ‘Cats also were 90.9 percent from the foul line.

Brent Eaton led all scorers with a game-high 28 points. Washburn finished with 13 points. Tyler Gerber had eight assists and three steals. As a team Hillsdale shot 48.2 percent on the day (27-of-56) and had 20 assists.
