MARQUETTE– Six United States Olympic Education Center freestyle wrestlers will compete at the annual Guelph Open in Ontario, Canada beginning Saturday, Jan. 22.

            In preparation for the competition, freestylers participated in the USA Female Wrestling Training Camp held at the USOEC Jan. 2-10 and traveled abroad for a training camp in Gotzis, Austria Dec. 10-20.

            Competing on Saturday are Marquette Senior High School senior Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.) at 59 kilograms, MSHS junior Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) at 48 kg, Northern Michigan University seniors Laura Conway (Traverse City, Mich.) and Jenna Pavlik (Lewes, Del.), both at 72 kg, NMU juniors Schulyer Brown (Montpelier, Va.) and Patricia Hill (Merrill, Wis.) at 59 and 48 kg, respectively.

            Three other members of the freestyle team will be competing at the WCWA College Nationals at Menlo College on Saturday, Jan. 29, in Atherton, Calif.

            NMU sophomore Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y.), USOEC’s November Athlete of the Month, will wrestle at 48 kg.  Earlier in the year, Sluberski placed first at the Canadian-American Invite.

            Also competing are NMU senior Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis.) at 72 kg and Cassandra Schmidt (Missoula, Mont.) at 48 kg.

            USOEC speedskaters will also hit the road this weekend. Freshmen April Albanese (Martins Creek, Pa.), Sarah Burg (Alpena, Mich.), Alaina Fiorenza (Wausau, Wis.) and Brett Perry (Midland, Mich.) will compete at the U.S. Junior Short Track Championships Jan. 21-23 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

             “I’d like to do my personal best and place in the top six,” said Florenza. “It’s always an extra challenge because the competition steps up every year.”
