MARQUETTE, Mich. — Saturday afternoon saw an intense Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match up go all the way down to the wire. The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team (7-8, 2-6) came up just short over visiting Lake Superior State (10-4, 7-1 GLIAC), 58-62.

Kellie Rietveld’s three-pointer with 23 seconds left cut the Lakers lead to just one (58-59). The ‘Cats then got a chance to take the lead after Chelsea Lyons and Staci Beckel got a jump ball call with the possession arrow in NMU’s favor. Rietveld’s shot was no good with three seconds left and LSSU hit a couple of free throws to put the game away.

Hillary Bowling led NMU with 13 points, but left the game midway through the second half with an injury and did not return. Steffani Stoeger finished with 12, while Lyons and Rietveld each netted 10 points apiece. Lyons added six assists on the afternoon.

The Lakers led 33-27 at half after leading by as many as 15. NMU went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to four with 1:44 to go in the first half. Bowling was 3 of 3 in the first half from three-point land. Stoeger had seven and Jaclyn Davey had six for the 'Cats. Cassy Schemberger led the Lakers with 14. Both teams had 12 rebounds and shot better than 50 percent in the first half.

LSSU who shot 51 percent (23-45) on the day were led by Schemberger with a game-high 23 points. Emily Joseph chipped in 18 points, three assists and four steals.

NMU shot 42 percent from the field (20-47) in the game. The ‘Cats were 11-15 from the foul line for 73 percent. LSSU was 15-17 from the charity strip for 88 percent. Both squads nearly matched up in every statistic category on the afternoon. The most lopsided stat for the day was the Lakers 11 percent (1-9) from three point land opposed to NMUs 35 percent (7-20).

NMU will next make the trip across the Mackinaw Bridge and head south to face Grand Valley State and Ferris State for the second time this season. The Wildcats will take on GVSU on Thursday (Jan. 20) at 8 p.m. Saturday's contest against the Bulldogs will be at 3 p.m.
