MARQUETTE, Mich. –The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team will play at home this week in a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. First up for the ‘Cats (6-7, 1-5 GLIAC) will be a Thursday night contest against Saginaw Valley State University (4-8, 0-6 GLIAC). The ‘Cats then host Lake Superior State University (8-5, 2-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
NMU finished 1-3 on its after-Christmas road trip. The ‘Cats picked up their first GLIAC win at Ohio Dominican (Dec. 30) but lost a pair of games at Tiffin (Jan. 2) and at Michigan Tech (Jan. 6).
Leading the ‘Cats is junior center Jared Benson, averaging 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Benson’s streak of scoring in double figures came to an end Saturday against Michigan Tech. During the streak of 14 games he registered at least 12 points in each game and scored more than 20 in four games. Benson leads the conference in field goal shooting at 62.8 percent. Junior DeAndre Taylor is second on the team in scoring (14.5) and is averaging 18.6 points per game in the last three.
Saginaw Valley State is winless in the conference (0-6). The Cardinals average a GLIAC low 68.1 points per game. Greg Foster leads the team in scoring at 23 points per game. Foster didn’t play until Jan. 6 and has scored 21 and 25 in the two games played. Keithan Jackson has played the last three games, averaging 17.7 points. Michael Fuate (13.8) and Chris Webb (11.9) also average in double figures for the Cardinals.
Lake Superior State is 2-4 in the conference with two wins over Saginaw Valley. Kyle Hunt leads LSSU averaging 16.8 points a game and 18.8 in conference games. Micah Hudson (12.1) is the other Laker in double figures. NMU has lost six straight to the Lakers and has not beaten LSSU since February 8, 2007.
