MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team travels to Houghton to take on rival No. 10 Michigan Tech in its only game this week. The Wildcats play game three of their three-game road trip at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 6).
NMU lost a pair of games in Ohio over the New Year weekend to Ohio Dominican and Tiffin. The Wildcats are 6-6 on the season and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. NMU has four players averaging double figures led by Staci Beckel’s 12.1 points per game. Chelsea Lyons is averaging 14.8 points per game in the five conference games.
Michigan Tech is 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Huskies have won six games in a row after their lone loss to Concordia University of St. Paul, who NMU defeated in overtime on Nov. 26. The Huskies have three players scoring double figures led by Lucy Dernovsek’s 12.6 points per game. The Huskies lead the conference in three-point shooting percentage at 42 percent. Dernovsek is shooting 58 percent herself from behind the arc.
The two teams met for the first time this season on Dec. 4 in Marquette with the Huskies winning, 77-65. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. from Houghton.
