COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team picked up its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Thursday night over conference newcomer Ohio Dominican, 82-72.
NMU is now 6-5 on the season and 1-3 in the conference. Ohio Dominican went into the game without a conference win itself and is now 2-9 overall and 0-6 in the GLIAC.
NMU was down 64-68 with 6:07 to go but the ‘Cats closed out the game on an 18-4 run. Mylan Murphy, DeAndre Taylor and Jared Benson scored baskets to regain the lead. Taylor added a dunk and Martin Gross scored six points in the final minute in a half to seal the victory.
“We came out ready to play and focused on getting the win.” NMU head coach Doug Lewis said. “We worked the ball into our big guys well.”
NMU came out of the gate firing and led by 24 (36-12) with 5:17 to go in the first half. NMU shot 72 percent in the first half and led by 12 (44-32) at the break. The Wildcats committed 15 turnover in the first half as the Panthers went on a 20-8 run late in the first half to climb back into the game.
“Turnovers got them back in the game late in the first half.” Lewis added. “It’s an area we try to focus on everyday in practice.”
Martin Gross had a great game, scoring a career-high 21 on 7 -for- 11 shooting.
“Martin Gross had a great game. Matt Everson got into some foul trouble and he made big shots all night long and took care of the ball and ran our offense for us.” Lewis said.
DeAndre Taylor led the team with 22 points. Jared Benson had 17 points. Mylan Murphy and Chris Paquin combined for 12 and Kem Bradshaw had five assists. Joe Simon played his first game in the Wildcat uniform.
NMU outrebounded the Panthers 36-18 and finished the game shooting 62 percent from the floor and making 14 -of- 19 from the free throw line. NMU committed 22 turnovers.
Morgan Jones (22) and Jake Mochoskay (13) led the Panthers in scoring. Ohio Dominican shot 46.7 percent.
The Wildcats will return to action after the New Year when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to take on the Tiffin Dragons on Sunday (Jan. 2). Game time is set for 1 p.m. Ryan Beckman will have the call on 100.3 FM "The Point".
