MARQUETTE, Mich. – The 2010 chapter of the Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team is complete. NMU was working with yet another young team having only four seniors on the squad in Kristen Hoklas, Jessie Krob, Kristen Schulz and Christina Turman.
NMU placed third in the first meet of the year which was the U.P. Collegiate Cross Country Opener at Michigan Tech. The Wildcats scored 47 points. Kristen Schulz (19:57.5) finished in fourth place while Mandy Dye (9th, 20:22.3) and Olivia Juntila (10th, 20:24.2) rounded out the top 10.
Schulz (19:25.6) finished third for ‘Cats at the Lake Superior State Challenge. Other top 10 finishers for NMU included Rita Woitas (6th, 19:34.4), Nora Kiilunen (7th, 19:36.1) and Juntila (8th, 19:49.3).
Next the ‘Cats ran the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. As a team the ‘Cats finished in eighth place with 266 points. NMU was led by Woitas (24:00.1), Juntila (24:00.6) and Turman (24:19.9).
At the following event, the Midwest Collegiate Meet on the campus of UW-Parkside,the ‘Cats finished second overall with 62 points. Turman paced the ‘Cats crossing the line in eighth place (19:07.7) and Kiilunen finished in 10th (19:10.8).
NMU hosted the U.P. Championship on Oct.22 at the NMU golf course. Turman finished second place with a time of 23:16.5. NMU took second overall at the event with 33 points, which was their best score as team all season. The ‘Cats had three other runners make the top 10. Woitas (8th, 24:02.4), Dye (9th, 24:16.8) and Marie-Soderman Helen (10th, 24:16.8).
The Wildcats finished in 10th place at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships. NMU tallied 256 points for the event which was hosted by Hillsdale. Two members finished in the top 50 Schulz (39th, 23:25.6) and Kiilunen (48th, 23:35.4).
In the final event of the season the ‘Cats were 15th at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky. with 414 points.Kiilunen finished 73rd, with a time of 23:41. Schulz (23:47.44), Soderman (23:50.81), and Woitas (23:53.21) were close behind as they finished 78th, 82nd, 85th, respectively. The final ‘Cats to finish were Juntila (24:10.68, 96th), Dye (24:20.95, 107th), and Turman (24:29.56, 109th).
