Wildcat Skiers Perform Well at Wolverine Challenge

MARQUETTE, Mich. – This past weekend (Dec.11-12) the Northern Michigan Nordic Ski teams’ traveled to Ironwood, Mich., in blizzard conditions to take part in the Wolverine Ski Challenge. No team score was kept for either men or women, but both squads performed well in the challenge. The men took part in two 10k Freestyle races, while the women skied in one 5k Freestyle race.

On Saturday, Andy Liebner took second in the men’s 10k Freestyle with a time of 0:23:29.38. Erik Soderman finished right behind Liebner in third (0:24:02.3). Kevin Cutts finished in 11th place (0:25:25.8) and Chris Bowler finished in 12thplace with a time of 0:25:31.2.

The women’s team had three skiers place in the top 10 in the 5k Freestyle race. Ingid Fjeldheim crossed the line in second place with a time of 0:14:18.4 and Christina Turman was in third with a time of 0:14:20.7. Monica Markvardsen finished in the 10th place slot at 0:14:46.2. Other NMU athletes competing were Libby Ellis and Jordyn Ross. Ellis finished in 12th (0:14:51.3) while Ross came in at 16th with a time of 0:15:04.6.

On Sunday the men skied once again in a 10k Freestyle and had four skiers place in the top 10. Liebner took second again (0:28:01.0). Soderman was fourth (0:28:27.9), Bowler (0:28:39.9) finished fifth and Cutts (0:28:56.2) took eighth.

Coach Sten Fjedheim thought his team took control of the weekend meet from the start.

“Both the men and women had a good day,” said Fjeldheim. “As the results show the NMU skiers dominated the college competition.”

The Wildcats will next compete in January when they travel to Rumford, Maine for the U.S. National Championships. This event will be a four day event taking place Jan. 2-8.

“We are looking forward to the competitions and a chance to see how we compete against other Division I Universities like Denver, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico,” said Fjeldheim.
