Ã‚‘Cats Skate Down to Notre Dame
MARQUETTE, Mich. –The Northern Michigan University hockey team (7-7-3, 6-4-2-0 CCHA) will travel to South Bend, Ind., this weekend to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (10-5-2, 8-3-1-1, CCHA). Both teams will skate twice in a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 11-12). Action gets underway inside the Joyce Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, with the puck dropping for a 4 p.m. contest on Sunday.
Entering the weekend the Irish are ranked 11th nationally and second in the CCHA standings with an 8-3-1-1 conference mark and a 7-4-1 overall slate. NMU is fourth in the standings with a 6-4-2-0 CCHA record and 7-7-3 overall.
Last year when the ‘Cats made the trip into South Bend they took the first game over the Irish 3-2 and skated to a 2-2 tie in the second game, but came up short in the shootout 2-1.
The Irish are lead by freshmen T.J. Tynan who leads his squad with nine goals and 20 points and is ranked fourth in the CCHA for point scoring. Tynan has also registered 11 assists for the season. Sophomore Goaltender Mike Johnson has a record of 8-3-2 with a 2.46 goal-against average and .908 save percentage.
Tyler Gron continues to lead the ‘Cats in goals with 17 and in points recording 17. Gron is coming off an impressive weekend series against Western Michigan scoring three goals and an assist, which gave him Offensive Player of the Week honors for the CCHA. Justin Florek is second in goals with six while four ‘Cats (Andrew Cherniwchan, Greger Hanson, Scott Macaulay and Gron) all have seven assists on the season. Between the pipes Reid Ellingson is 5-5-2 with a 2.30 goal-against average and a .927 save-percentage.
NMU will return to the Berry Events Center on Dec. 17 for showdown against Michigan Technological University. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
