MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team looks to snap its two game losing streak on Friday (Dec. 10) when the ‘Cats welcome nonconference Division III opponent Northland to the Berry Events Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
NMU has lost two in a row, starting with Gannon on Nov. 27 and then Michigan Tech on Saturday (Dec. 4). The Huskies handed the Wildcats their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association loss on, 109-84. NMU is now 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in the GLIAC.
NMU is led by 6-10 junior center Jared Benson (Carney, Mich.) who has scored in double figures in every game for the ‘Cats this year. Benson is averaging 17.2 points per game, good for third in the GLIAC. Benson is shooting 66 percent from the floor and is also averaging 5.8 rebounds per game. DeAndre Taylor (Chicago, Ill/Malcolm X) is averaging 11.2 points per game and is the only other Wildcat to average double figures.
Northland is 2-4 on the season and already has one win on the week as they defeated Finlandia, 78-76, Tuesday night in Hancock. Michael Mackey leads Northland in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game. Five other Lumberjacks are averaging better than five points per game.
NMU leads the all-time series against Northland 71-12. The ‘Cats have won 22 games in a row against the Lumberjacks and won, 81-42 last year in Marquette.
Friday’s matchup is game number two of a four game home stand for the ‘Cats. NMU played Michigan Tech to start the home stand and will host Finlandia, Grand Valley and Ferris next week. NMU is 1-1 at the Berry Events Center.
