Track and Field Finds Success in First Meet
DULUTH, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University track and field team had a great day at “The Opener”. St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. was the meet host. The ‘Cats took first place finishes in eight events and had 27 top five finishers.
The sprinters started off winning some events. Colby West finished first in the 300 meter dash with a time of 43.03. Sara Turschak (43.69) was second.
Catherine Angeli won the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.39. Samara White (7.50) was second, Brittnee Balbierz (7.51) was third, and Katy Lafayette (7.55) was fourth. Angeli (25.77) was second in the 200 meter dash, while Balbierz (26.51) was third, Lafayette (26.81) was fourth and Mariah Beamen (28.41) was ninth.
NMU had five runners in the top 10 in the 55 meter hurdles. Bailey Franklin came in second with a time of 1:42.32. Melissa Christensen (8.95) was third, Stephanie Hahn (9.19) was eighth, Katie Searles (9.27) was ninth and Brooke Granquist (9.33) was tenth.
NMU’s two relay teams finished first in the 4x400 meter relay (4:13.15) and the 4x200 meter relay (1:47.31).
Krstina Mattson was second in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:42.32. Sydney Schultz (1:46.42) was third and Katrina Lamansky (1:47.31) was fourth.
The ‘Cats didn’t excel just in the running events, the field athletes performed just as well. Bailey Franklin cleared 1.62 meters to win the high jump. Brooke Granquist (1.57) was second and Melissa Christensen (1.47) was third.
Jamie Roberts cleared 3.67 meters to win the pole vault while Sara Turschak (2.59) was fifth.
Melissa Christensen finished first in the long jump with a 5.00 meter jump. Stephanie Hahn (4.57) was fourth.
NMU finished one, two, three in the triple jump. Bailey Franklin jumped 11.89 meters for first place. Brooke Granquist (10.67) was second and Delany Lovett (10.58) was third.
Mariah Beaman was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 10.53 meters.
NMU has over a month off before it travels to Sault Ste. Marie to run in the Lake Superior State Open on Jan. 21. NMU hosts its own meet a day later in the Superior Dome.
