GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan swimming and diving team traveled to Grand Rapids to participate in the Calvin Invite. Nine teams are competing in the three day event. NMU is fifth after two days with 146 points. Grand Valley leads with 662.
Friday, NMU had many swimmers competing in the finals. Gaby Alzaga has been NMU’s only event winner so far. Alzaga won the 100 yard backstroke (58.20). Kelli Vander Baan finished third in the one meter dive (409.5). Breanne Bajo was eighth (276.05) in the event.
Other top 10 finishers were Olga Budiansky who finished sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.89), Lindsay Stedman (8th)in the 400 yard IM (4:59.85) and Lauren Cockels (8th) in the 50 yard freestyle (24.88). NMU’s 200 yard freestyle team took eight place. Members of that squad were Lauren Cockels, Kelsey Sipple, Lindsay Stedman and Meghan Cepela. Sipple was 10th in the 50 yard freestyle (24.95).
Top 20 finishers include Alzaga (13th) 200 yard freestyle (2:00.58), Gena Haas (16th) 200 yard butterfly (2:34.84), Jessica Linnen (19th) in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:13.65), Stephanie Rogaczewski (20th) in the 400 yard IM (5:11.35).
Thursday, NMU had three swimmers in the top 20 in the 1650 yard freestyle. Lindsay Stedman placed 13, Stephanie Rogaczewski was 17th and Jessica Linen was 18th.
Competition continues Saturday morning from Calvin College.
