Strong First Half and Balanced Scoring Leads Ã‚‘Cats to Third Win in a Row
ERIE, Pa. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team picked up its third win of the season, defeating Daemen College, 82-80 from the campus of Gannon University. The Wildcats had a very productive first half and used balanced scoring to hold of Daemen in the first round of the 27th Annual Gary Miller Classic.
NMU led by 22 at the half, outscoring Daemen 46-24. NMU used a 35-11 run to start the game and take the commanding lead at half. Benson, Taylor and Murphy combined for 29 of the team’s 46 points in the first half.
NMU had five players in double figures. Mylan Murphy picked up his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Jared Benson led the ‘Cats with 19 points on seven of eight shooting. DeAndre Taylor has scored in double figures in every game this season, adding 13. Raymont McElroy had 14, Chris Paquin had 10 and Matthew Craggs had nine.
NMU outrebounded Daemen 53-46 and shot 43 percent to Daemen’s 29. Dominic Mazzocchi poured in 32 for Damen, while Jim Regan and Moustapha Baidy had 10 each.
Daemen used a 15-0 run late in the second half to tie the score at 73. NMU never got behind as Raymont McElroy added six free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
NMU is now 3-1 on the season and will play in the championship game on Saturday at 8 p.m.
