MARQUETTE– Athletic persistence and positive leadership skills have earned United States Olympic Education Center resident, Zac Nielson (Zimmerman, Minn.), the title of October Athlete of the Month for the USOEC program.

Greco-Roman wrestling coach Rob Hermann said, “Zac is a leader on and off the mat, he works through injuries and is always upbeat with a great attitude.”

Nielson showed how hard work pays off by placing fifth at the University World Championships in Torino, Italy, Oct. 30. He finished as the top American wrestler, which helped Team USA to a 12th-place finish.

“University World Championships is a very tough international competition for his age group, and he had more wins than the rest of the U.S. team put together,” said Hermann.

Currently in his junior year at Northern Michigan University, Nielson would like to eventually teach and coach wrestling.
