MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan head swimming and diving coach Heidi Voigt has announced the signing of six swimmers who will join the team for 2011-12 season. Sisters, Dakota and Madisen Sechena, Kayla Barr, Emily Brennan, Deborah Lawrence and Xinhe Tian have signed national letters of intent to attend Northern Michigan.
Voigt is looking to get her program headed in the right direction. This is the first class that she will bring in as the head coach at NMU, “My fall signings are amazing. All of these women will bring some much needed depth to our squad. This is the best class NMU has signed in awhile.”
Dakota and Madisen Sechena are from Great Falls, Montana. Dakota specializes in the backstroke and mid distance freestyle. Madisen specializes in the breaststroke and individual medley events. Both swim for the Falls Aquatic Swim Team.
“Dakota’s enthusiasm and drive will be a great addition to our team. Madisen has great stroke technique and races with determination, which will be very helpful next year.” Voigt said about the sisters.
Kayla Barr is from Waukesha, Wisconsin and swims for the Waukesha Express Swim Team. Voigt likes Barr’s versatility, “She will be part of our distance squad but is very well rounded and someone that I can put in almost any event and she will contribute.”
Emily Brennan is from Great Falls, Montana. Brennan specializes in the individual medley and breaststroke and now swims in Colorado at Wheat Ridge High School where she is an All-Conference selection and scholastic All-American.
Deborah “Debi” Lawrence is from Pflugerville, Texas. Lawrence’s best time in the 200 Individual Medley is already a "B" cut for nationals and her 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle times are less than a second off of the cut as well.
Xinhe Tian is a freestyle specialist from Shandong, China. Tian has the potential to be a top finalist at NCAA Nationals. She will attend NMU in January to join the English as a Second Language program before joining the team in the fall.
