Volleyball Plays Indianapolis Friday at 5 p.m.
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 20 Northern Michigan University volleyball team will play at Hillsdale College for the third time in the last two weeks this weekend when it plays the No. 19 University of Indianapolis in the NCAA tournament. Match time for Friday is set for 5 p.m.
NMU is No. 20 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The ‘Cats are tied with West Florida as the No. 20 team in the nation. Both teams received 178 points. The ‘Cats were No. 21 last week. Indianapolis is right above the ‘Cats at No. 19 this week. The Greyhounds were No. 19 last week.
NMU is the No. 5 seed and takes on the No. 4 seeded University of Indianapolis. The regional is hosted by the Midwest’s No. 1 seed Hillsdale. This is the third year in a row NMU has been selected for the tournament and the second time in three years that NMU and UIndy will meet in the NCAA as the four and five seed. The Greyhounds defeated the Wildcats in the 2008 NCAA tournament (3-2) in Allendale, Mich.
NMU and UIndy met earlier this season (Oct. 16) at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament. The Greyhounds handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season,3-0 (25-25, 25-22, 25-15) after starting 17-0. UIndy is 25-8 overall and finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) with a record of 11-3. They lost to Lewis in the GLVC tournament championship.
The Greyhounds are led by Kristina Kerrigan (380) and Kristina Hefferan (365) in kills. Chenata Morris (1117) leads the team in assists, while Lindsay Callahan (564) leads in digs and Courtney Anglemyer (87) in blocks.
NMU is 22-6 overall and finished third in the GLIAC with a record of 15-4. The Wildcats defeated Tiffin in the first round of the GLIAC tournament before losing to Grand Valley in the semifinals.
The Midwest Regional kicks off when No. 3 Lewis plays No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis at noon on Friday. No. 2 Grand Valley State and No. 7 Northern Kentucky play at 2:30 p.m. UIndy and NMU play before Friday’s quarterfinals wrap-up with No. 1 Hillsdale and No. 8 Southern Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
The semifinals will be played on Saturday. The first game is set for 4:30 p.m. If NMU wins Friday, the ‘Cats will take on the winner of the Hillsdale and Southern Indiana match in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. Sunday’s regional championship match is set for 4 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Children under the age of two are free.
