MARQUETTE, Mich. – Entering the weekend Northern Michigan University hockey team captain Phil Fox did not have a goal. After the weekend split with Bowling Green State University he now has three to his credit. Last night he scored a goal, in the 2-1 loss, and added two more tonight including the game-winner in the 5-1 win over the Falcons.
With the win the ‘Cats improve to 4-6-1 overall on the season and 4-4-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Falcons fall to 5-7-0 and 2-6-0 CCHA.
Fox recorded the first two goals of the game. His first marker was at 1:12 of the first period. Assisting were Mike Maltese and Justin Florek. In the second period Fox made the score 2-0 with his third goal of the season at 5:41 on the power play. Tyler Gron and Scott Macaulay assisted on the goal.
Also in the middle frame BGSU cut the NMU lead in half with a power-play goal of their own by Brett Mohler at 11:03.
NMU added three more scores in the final 20 minutes of play. Gron with his team-leading fifth goal of the season made the score 3-1 at 13:45. Jared Brown assisted on the goal. The final two goals NMU scored were on the power play. Andrew Cherniwchan at 17:54 made the count 4-1 with his fourth goal of the season. Gron and Kyle Follmer assisted on the goal. Kory Kaunisto recorded his first career goal at 19:01 for the final score of the night. Austin Handley picked up his first career point as a ‘Cat with the assist. Gron ended the night with three points on a goal and two assists.
NMU was 3-11 on the power play while BGSU was 1-5. The ‘Cats had the shot advantage for the game at 40-16.
Reid Ellingson picked up the win for NMU as he had 15 saves. Andrew Hammond recorded the loss as he had 35 saves.
The ‘Cats take its longest road trip of the season next week. NMU will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska for a CCHA series against the Nanooks. Action is on Friday and Saturday nights (Nov. 19-20) with the puck dropping each night at 11:35 p.m. (Eastern).
