Lewis and Wildcats Win First Game
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season at the Sailfish Classic, defeating Lynn University (0-1), 69-61, Saturday evening. It was also the first win as a Wildcat for first-year head coach Doug Lewis as the ‘Cats led from start to finish.
The ‘Cats had very balanced scoring led by junior center Jared Benson who shot five for eight from the field and four for five from the free throw line to lead the ‘Cats with 14 points. Matthew Craggs added 12 points on four for seven shooting including two three pointers. DeAndre Taylor was also in double digits with 11 points. Raymont McElroy had nine while Mylan Murphy and Martin Gross chipped in with seven each.
NMU shot 44 percent to Lynn’s 33. The ‘Cats picked up the win even though they were outrebounded and had more turnovers.
Lynn University, from Boca Raton, Florida, was led in scoring by Terrell Williams (12) and Josh Garcia (10).
NMU opens the home portion of the 2010-11 season when they host Spring Arbor on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 1 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.
