MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell behind the Bowling Green State University Falcons 2-0 and tried to get back in the game. A third period goal cut the BGSU lead in half, but that was not enough as the Falcons skated away with a 2-1 win Friday night in the first game of the weekend set at the Berry Events Center.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-6-1 overall on the season and 3-4-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). BGSU improves to 5-6-0 and 2-5-0 CCHA.
A power-play goal by Brett Mohler at 15:46 of the first period put the Falcon on the board. BGSU made the score 2-0 on a goal by Marc Rodriguez at 7:51 of the second period. Phil Fox at 3:45 of the third period made the score 2-1 with his first goal of the season. Scott Macaulay and Jared Brown assisted on the goal.
Over the past three games the NMU power play is 1-8 which included 0-4 tonight. The Falcons were 1-6 with the extra skater. Shots were almost even as the Falcons had one more than the ‘Cats (28-27).
Reid Ellingson picked up the loss for NMU as he had 26 saves on the night. Nick Eno with 26 saves also picked up the win.
The two teams will square off Saturday night (Nov. 13) for the second game of the weekend tilt. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m.
