Wildcats Drop Opening Game Of The Season
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Doug Lewis Era at Northern Michigan University began Friday night against Palm Beach Atlantic. Trailing by 19 points at the half (51-32) the NMU men’s basketball team fell to Palm Beach Atlantic by a score of 77-60. It was the opening game for both squads.
Palm Beach Atlantic jumped out to a 5-1 lead after a little more than three minutes of play. A three-pointer by Martin Gross put the Wildcats down by one (5-4). Jared Benson’s lay-up had the ‘Cats to within three at 12-9 with 11:13 showing on the clock. Mylan Murphy’s tip-in at 9:19 had NMU to within three once again (16-13). With 7:08 left in the first half Benson made both of his free throws to narrow the Palm Beach Atlantic lead to 23-22. Raymont McElroy’s three-pointer at 4:50 gave NMU its first lead of the game (27-26). An 11-0 run over a span of about two minutes had Palm Beach Atlantic back in control at 37-27 with 2:38 left before the half. NMU would score five points the rest of the half.
The second half saw Palm Beach Atlantic extend its double-digit lead. NMU was down by 19 points (60-41) a little over five minutes gone in the half. David Maturah’s tip-in at 12:47 made the score 60-48 which capped a 7-0 run for the ‘Cats. The rest of the way was all Palm Beach Atlantic as they quickly had a 20-point plus lead with a little less than seven minutes left in the game. DeAndre Taylor lay-up and Kem Bradshaw’s free throw with less than two minutes left in the game finish the scoring for the ‘Cats on the night.
Leading the ‘Cats in the scoring column were Benson and Taylor with 12 and 10 points respectively. Benson also had a team-high seven rebounds. David Wood led Palm Beach Atlantic with 23 points as teammate Jonathan Lawrence added 20.
For the game the ‘Cats were 22-52 from the floor (42.3 percent). From the three-point line NMU was 6-19 (31.6 percent. Gross was 3-6 from the three-ball land. At the charity stripe the ‘Cats were 10-26 (38.5 percent).
NMU will face Lynn University tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 13) at 5 p.m. in Florida.
