MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team (22-5) faces the Grand Valley State Lakers (22-5) in the second semifinal match at the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball Tournament.   NMU and GVSU will hit the court at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 at Jesse Philips Arena on the campus of Hillsdale College.  Hillsdale is the top seed for the tournament, GVSU is the number two seed, NMU is the third seed and Ferris State is the fifth seed.

Ferris State (18-9) and the host school, Hillsdale College (26-1), will open up the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.  NMU defeated Tiffin in quarterfinal action while the Lakers advanced with a win over Northwood.  Hillsdale took care of Ashland in four sets with Ferris State winning in four over Wayne State to advance.

The Wildcats split with the Lakers during the regular season.  NMU took the match in Allendale, Mich. in September with a five-set win (25-18, 14-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13).  GVSU turned the table on the ‘Cats a couple of weeks ago in Marquette by taking a four-set match (15-25, 28-26, 16-25, 20-25).

NMU swept both matches against the Bulldogs during the regular season.   During a September road swing the ‘Cats defeated the Bulldogs in Big Rapids, Mich. (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23).  In Marquette about three weeks ago, NMU held on for a five-set win (25-19, 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 15-10).  NMU only faced the Chargers once during the 2010 season and that was in Hillsdale the final weekend of the regular season.  Hillsdale won the match in three straight (22-25, 24-26, 22-25).

The winners of the semifinal matches will play for the GLIAC title Sunday afternoon (Nov. 14 at 4 p.m.).  The winner of the 2010 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament is awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.  Hillsdale, now 26-1 (19-0 GLIAC) on the season, is ranked first in the latest Midwest Region poll. GVSU, currently 22-5 overall (17-2 GLIAC) is second in the region.  NMU, ranked fifth in the regional poll, is also 22-5 overall (15-4 GLIAC).  Ferris State upped its record to 18-9 (13-6 GLIAC) this season.
