MARQUETTE, Mich. – It did not take the Northern Michigan University volleyball team much time to advance in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball Tournament.   In fact it took the Wildcats a little over an hour to defeat the Dragons of Tiffin University.  NMU won the quarterfinal match in three straight (25-19, 25-15, 25-22).

With the win the ‘Cats improve to 22-5 on the season.  Tiffin ends its season at 15-15.  NMU will now face Grand Valley State Saturday (Nov. 13) in the GLIAC semifinals. Ferris State will face Hillsdale in the other semifinal.  The championship match is on Sunday (Nov. 14).

In tonight’s match the ‘Cats received solid play from Ana Lopes and Sami Vierk as each had 12 kills.  Lopes recorded 17 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .296. Vierk had a hitting percentage of .364 on 22 total attempts.  As a team the ‘Cats tallied 43 kills in 89 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .360.

NMU’s side out percentage was 58 percent in the first set (10-17), 52 percent in the second set (9-17) and 59 percent in the third set (13-22).

Abby Lovell ended the match with 34 assists.  As a team the ‘Cats recorded 13 service aces.  Leading he way was Lopes with four and Emma Wolfe added three.  Kristin Wetzel and Becca Feuerherd led the ‘Cats defensive efforts with eight and seven digs respectively.  At the net the team had two block solos and four block assists.
