MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 3 seed Northern Michigan University volleyball team (21-5, 15-4 GLIAC) will host the No. 6 seed Tiffin Dragons (15-14, 11-8 GLIAC) Thursday (Nov. 11) from Vandament Arena in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

NMU is ranked No. 21 this week in the weekly American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll after receiving 159 points. Last week the Wildcat were No. 19.

NMU finished 1-2 in its last matches of the regular season at Hillsdale, Wayne State and Findlay. The top team in the GLIAC, Hillsdale won (3-0) Friday night, Wayne State won (3-1) Saturday and the Wildcats were finally able to pick up a win at Findlay (3-1) to end the regular season on Sunday.

Tiffin ended the season on a four-match winning streak to qualify for the GLIAC tournament for the first time in school history. Last season the Dragons were 0-16 in their second season in the GLIAC but had a major turnaround in 2010, finishing 11-8 for sixth place. Tiffin is 5-6 on the road.

Danielle McQuade (313), Brooke Bernabei (273) and Brittany Teaford (215) lead the Dragons in kills. Teaford also leads the team with 117 total blocks. Jessica Adams is tops in assists (951) and Lindsay Heller leads the team in service aces (31) and digs (525)

NMU and Tiffin faced off once this season (Oct. 8) when the Wildcats won 3-1 (14-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-13). NMU is 11-1 at home in Vandament Arena. NMU is 7-3 in three-set matches, 10-2 in four-set matches and 4-0 in five-set matches.

NMU head coach Dominic Yoder knows it’s going to be a challenge to beat the Dragons, “They’re a scrappy team and beat us in the first set down there. They play a different style. We have to be ready.”

Ana Lopes and Sami Vierk lead the team with 286 kills apiece. Emma Wolfe has 253. Abby Lovell has 902 assists. Lopes (45) and Kristin Wetzel (31) lead the team in service aces. Katie Twardzik leads the team with 55 total blocks, while Vierk has 53.

Come out and support the Wildcats as they try to advance to the GLIAC tournament semifinal. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Thursday.
