SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lakers of Lake Superior State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena and held on for a 3-1 win over the Wildcats. NMU split the weekend series after last night’s 4-1 win. The loss snapped the ‘Cats three-game winning streak.
NMU falls to 3-5-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). LSSU improves to 3-5-2 and 1-4-1 CCHA.
After a scoreless first period the Lakers tallied a marker by Kyle Jean for the early 1-0 lead at 5:26 of the second period. Rick Schofield then made the score 2-0 with his goal at 11:18.
Justin Florek put the ‘Cats on the board with his fourth goal of the season, on the power play, in the second period at 12:32. Three of his goals this season have been on the power play. Assisting on the goal were Andrew Cherniwchan and Kyle Follmer. Less than a minute later (13:11), Domenic Monardo of LSSU scored the final goal of the evening for the final score (3-1).
The home team had the shot advantage on the night at 33-22. NMU tallied its lone goal of the evening on the power play and were 1-4 for the game while the Lakers were 0-4.
Jared Coreau registered 30 saves for the ‘Cats between the pipes tonight. Kevin Kapalka picked up the win for the Lakers with 21 saves.
NMU will face the Falcons of Bowling Green State University next week at the Berry Events Center (Nov. 12-13). The puck will drop each night at 7:35 p.m. Friday’s game is Military Appreciation Night where all military personnel and their families can get into the game for $6.
