SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team won its third game in a row Friday night against the Lake Superior State Lakers at Taffy Abel Arena. NMU scored twice in the first and third periods to pick up the 4-1 win.
The Wildcats improve to 3-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Lake Superior falls to 2-5-2 and 0-4-1 CCHA.
Andrew Cherniwchan put the ‘Cats on the board first with his third goal of the season at 4:05 of the opening period. Wade Epp and Greger Hanson picked up the assists. Tyler Gron made the score 2-0 with his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 12:39. Justin Florek and Scott Macaulay helped on the goal.
The only scoring in the second period was a power-play goal by the Lakers at 18:30. Domenic Monardo scored for the home team.
Jared Brown scored his first goal of the season at 6:47 of the third period for the 3-1 lead. Gron and Florek both picked up their second point of the evening with an assist. Hanson capped off the scoring, with his second point of the night, on an empty-net goal at 18:29 (4-1). Stephan Vigier and Cherniwchan assisted. Cherniwchan also recorded two points on the night.
NMU did not have a power play on the night. Phil Fox did attempt a penalty shot at 2:40 of the third period which was missed. Lake Superior was 1-6 with the extra skater. The home team had the shot advantage at 43-29.
Reid Ellingson went the distance for the ‘Cats in goal as he registered 42 saves to pick up his first win of the season. Brian Mahoney-Wilson had 25 saves for the Lakers.
The two teams will play the back end of the weekend series Saturday night (Nov. 6) at Taffy Abel Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
